Question: silent breaks
How do I catch a renamed form field before it writes empty records?
A builder posted on 2026-09-23 (r/nocode on reddit.com) that a renamed form field let an automation keep running, writing a valid-looking CRM record with empty values.

Short answer
Check the input before every write: required fields present, not empty, and in the shape you expect. If a check fails, stop the run and alert a named person instead of writing the record. Then test it by renaming a field on staging.
Why it stays silent
The automation did not fail. It ran, mapped a field that no longer exists to nothing, and wrote a record that passes every check the CRM runs. Nothing turns red, so nobody looks.
The checks to put before each write
- Required fields present and not empty.
- Expected shape: an email looks like an email, a number is a number.
- A schema fingerprint of the incoming form or webhook, compared to the last known one.
- A halt-and-alert path: the run stops and a named person gets the payload that failed.
How to test it
Rename one form field on a staging copy and submit the form. Pass: the run halts before it writes, and the alert reaches the named person with the failing payload. This is the Silent-Break Watch acceptance test in the Six-Guardrail Pre-Flight.

Questions
Questions about this
- Can I lock the form so nobody renames fields?
- You can, and it helps, but forms, webhooks and upstream apps still change. The check before the write catches the change you did not plan for.
- What about AI steps inside the automation?
- Treat an AI step like any other input: check that its output is present and in the expected shape before anything downstream writes it.
